The John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County (formerly Cook County Hospital) Department of Medicine trains medical students throughout their four years. We offer a wide variety of opportunities for medical students during their clinical years including third year core clerkships, fourth year subinternships and fourth year medicine subspecialty electives.
The students who rotate at Stroger Hospital are an integral part of the patient care team. On the inpatient wards, students are assigned to a team consisting of an attending physician, two residents and two interns. Call is every fourth day and there is no overnight call for the students. Because there are no private patients, the students and residents directly manage the patients’ care with the help of the attending. This allows for a high degree of autonomy along with close attending supervision not only for the residents but also for the students.
Because Stroger Hospital is a large public hospital, students are exposed to a wide spectrum of diseases and a multiethnic population. In addition, we offer many academic educational experiences. There is a daily lecture series that is taught by both our generalists and specialists and includes a weekly case presentation. Each team has formal teaching sessions scheduled throughout the week. Students are encouraged to attend the daily noon conferences held for the house staff. Finally, the students meet weekly in small groups with our chief medical residents for bedside teaching.
The third year medicine clerkship is offered to students at our affiliate schools: Rush University, Midwestern University/Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Chicago Medical School. However, the fourth year subinternship and other fourth year electives are open to all students who attend an American medical school.
We do not accept students from non-U.S. medical schools at this time.
However, if you are interested in any other elective, you may contact each department separately and check their policy and availability. I believe that the only departments that do allow foreign medical students are: Anesthesiology (312-864-3217), Pediatrics (312-864-4505), Psychiatry (312-864-9681) and Trauma (312-864-2733).
Clerkships: We also offer electives in the medical subspecialties for fourth year students. Please click here to review the available clerkships. To inquire about these, please contact Donna Schiffer, the Medical Student Programs Coordinator, at 312-864-7320 or dschiff@cchil.org.
All rotation requests and inquiries must be made by e-mail!
