Salary

Stroger Hospital of Cook County provides residents with an excellent benefit package. As of June 2008, the salaries are as follows:

PGY1 $44,138
PGY2 $46,606
PGY3 $48,877

Benefits

Along with a competitive salary, Stroger Hospital of Cook County offers an array of benefits including excellent health insurance and a generous sick leave policy.

Insurance

Malpractice Insurance
The County indemnifies all employees involved in direct patient care at all Cook County Health Facilities.

Health and Disability Insurance
The County provides health benefits to housestaff physicans and dependents. The County offers the house staff physican and his/her family the option of choosing a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) from those available and federally qualified in the Chicago area for this health coverage. The cost to the resident for single or family coverage is $16.00 a month.

Ordinary Disability benefits are provided in accordance with the regulations of the Cook County Employees' Annuity Benefit Fund.

Dental Insurance
Residents receive dental insurance through an HMO plan free of charge.

Life Insurance
Life insurance equal to the resident's annual salary is provided at no charge.

Holiday and Vacation Leave

Residents receive 28 days of vacation annually. In addition, residents receive 11 paid holidays per year and a paid "floating" day.

Bereavement Leave

Residents are eligible to receive three days paid bereavement leave.

Family and Medical Leave

Residents may take up to three months unpaid family and medical leave.

House Staff Association

The Stroger Hospital of Cook County House Staff Association (HSA) is the union representing interns, residents and fellows employed by the Hospital. It has existed as the house staff physicians' organization for many years and as a union since the early 1970's.

The HSA Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) provides for negotiation of wages, benefits, and working conditions, due process in disciplinary matters and training issues. The House Staff Association has elected officers, departmental representatives, and committee chairs. It also has two staff persons, an administrator and an organizer.

Counseling Services
Counseling services are available through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) of Cook County.

Meals
House staff physicians are provided free meals in the cafeteria every day of the week and are permitted up to five guest meals per month free of charge.

Lab Coats
At the time of initial hire, House Staff physicians receive lab coats free of charge. During their employment, replacement coats are furnished free of charge.

Laundry
Soiled lab coats are laundered by the hospital free of charge.
