Welcome to the website for the residency training program at John H. Stroger Jr. (New Cook County) Hospital. Our Hospital is a University-affiliated Public Teaching Hospital that has provided excellent medical care to the people of Cook County for more then 100 years regardless of their ability to pay and also been a national center for medical training.
Advantages of training at Cook County Hospital
Teaching:
Faculty at our hospital place a high priority on medical education. We have over 100 teaching attendings in the department of medicine in 13 subspecialties. Teaching is focused on patients and in small group interactive formats as much as possible. Residents have protected time for teaching which occurs in a wide variety of formats including lectures, morning reports, case conferences, mortality & morbidity, grand rounds etc.
Balance between autonomy and supervision:
Because there are no private patients, residents as well as their attendings play a
primary role in the clinical care of patients. Residents are expected to develop their own diagnostic and treatment plans under the supervision of the attendings. We see an incredible spectrum of diseases unmatched by most institutions. Because patients often present with undiagnosed or advanced diseases residents develop tremendous skill and confidence in handling complex cases.
Longitudinal Care:
Many of our patients do not have a primary care physician. Subsequently a significant proportion of discharged inpatients follow-up in the residents own outpatient clinic (½ day/week) ensuring continuity of care. Over 3 years of training residents gain experience in both acute and long-term medical problems
Research:
There are many opportunities for residents to participate in research opportunities at the Hospital. Residents have participated in clinical vignette competitions at the national and regional level and undertaken both clinical and basic science research projects
Medical Students:
We are a university affiliated teaching hospital and act as one of the primary training sites for Medical students across all the medical disciplines. Participating in medical student education helps develop your own teaching and leadership skills
No matter where you choose to practice or in what specialty, the expert supervision and diverse educational experiences that make up your residency training at Cook County Hospital will prepare you for a strong future in medicine. By the end of your training you will have treated an extensive array of diseases, performed a wide variety of procedures and managed many complicated cases. A teaching team of both primary care and specialty physicians will prepare you to care for patients with the most challenging clinical problems. To master ambulatory continuity care you will follow your own panel of patients in a clinic-based outpatient practice over the 3 years of your training.
