Our Patients

Our patients are a big reason that JSH is such a phenomenal place to train. The variety of cases that are encountered at JSH is amazing. For a look at the patient's diagnoses during one month of inpatient wards, please see: Reilly, B.M. Physical Examination in the care of medical inpatients: an observational study. Lancet. 2003; 362:1100-05

Some of our recent patients:
In addition to the "routine" cases of congestive heart failure and pneumonia, every call seems to bring at least one "unusual" case. Below are several pictures of such cases. See if you can correctly diagnose each case. The answers will be provided at the time of your interview.

The patient is a 33 year-old male with a history of Hodgkins Disease, last treated 2 months prior, who presented with a 2- week history of productive cough, dyspnea, fevers and skin rash.
46 y/o man travelled to Kentucky where he was digging ditches and cleaning a house of pigeon droppings. The friend who was working with him became ill after 1 week and returned to Chicago.

The patient stayed and worked for two more weeks before becoming too sick to work. He also returned to Chicago. He presented with fevers, chills, night sweats, dry cough, and a 13-pound weight loss.
