| Investigators who wish to use potentially hazardous agents in their
research have an obligation to educate themselves and all others working
with those agents about the proper ways to handle, store and dispose of
them. The Centers for Disease Control publishes Biosafety
in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories with which the investigator
should be familiar. A copy can be found in the Research Resource Room,
603 Durand. A manual written for CDC's labs, General
Laboratory Health and Safety may also be useful.
All research laboratories must comply with Hospital safety policies
for handling, storing and disposing of potentially hazardous agents used
in research. This policy applies to chemicals, biologic agents, radioisotopes,
and agents used for recombinant DNA research.
Investigators responsible for overseeing research laboratory operations
must maintain an up-to-date inventory of materials used in the area.
Such inventories should include for every agent used research:

Name of the agent
-
Manufacturer
-
Quantity currently stored
-
Place of storage (Building and Room #)
-
Copy of the MSDS Sheet
Copies of these inventories should be forwarded to the Hospital
Safety Office at least annually or as requested by that office.
In addition to keeping up-to-date inventories, researchers who wish
to bring hazardous materials to a Bureau site for the purpose of doing
research must complete the Research
Biosafety Form and obtain approval from the Safety Office, or in the
case of radioisotopes, the Radiation Safety Officer. Protocols which
involve the use of recombinant
DNA techniques must be approved by the Recombinant DNA subcommittee
of the Safety Committee.
This approval process applies only to hazardous agents acquired solely
for research. Hazardous agents used in the course of clinical activities
are governed by the Hospital's Safety Policy.
