Provident Hospital
John Fairman, COO
Provident Hospital of Cook County is a 243-bed licensed public community
teaching hospital. It is located in the Grand Boulevard area of Chicago's
South side, one of the most economically depressed sections of the city.
Provident was one of the first hospitals founded by African-Americans.
It was acquired by the County in 1990, and after an extensive renovation
program, reopened in 1993.
The central focus of the hospital is on family medicine. Clinical Departments
include Medicine, Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Family
Practice, Pediatrics and Neonatology. It is linked to Cook County Hospital
for tertiary and subspecialty care, and has an academic affiliation with
Loyola University Medical School.
The newly renovated eight story hospital includes a medical/surgical
unit, an obstetrics unit, a pediatric unit, and an intensive care unit.
Provident Hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and equipment.
Six birthing rooms are part of the 31-bed obstetrics unit. This service
will provide for labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery to be completed
in a single room with a home-like setting. Adjacent to the unit is a 10-bed
intermediate care nursery and a 30-bed Newborn Nursery.
The Emergency Room has been expanded from 5,000 to 15,000 square feet,
thereby providing for a comprehensive emergency room capable of delivering
services to about 95% of trauma patients. The remaining 5% are transferred
to or diverted through a formal referral system to Cook County Hospital's
Level I Trauma Center. In addition, ten observation beds are available
for those patients requiring an average stay of less than 24 hours.
The John Sengstacke Professional Building provides a setting for ambulatory
care where patients receive pre-admission consultation and discharge follow-up
care with physicians. Located adjacent to the main building, the Sengstacke
Building is a four-level structure.
