Investigators in the Bureau conduct research in a variety of biomedical disciplines. These include: 
  • clinical trials of new drugs and devices
  • trauma
  • HIV/AIDS, with an emphasis on women, children and adolescents
  • health services research
  • hospital cost analysis
  • burn treatment
  • basic and applied research in surgical subspecialties

WORKSHOPS

2008 Workshop Schedule

These workshops are open to any County-affiliated investigator or project director. To register, call Funeka Sihlali, RN at 312-864-4821.   If you would like to schedule one or more of these workshops in your Department or at another site, please call Funeka Sihlali, RN at 864-4821.


Grant Writing Seminar

(3 hours)
Gives an overview of the entire process of developing a project and applying for funding. Includes information on approaching both governmental and private funders, describes an approach to developing grant budgets, discusses stylistic and content issues that are frequent stumbling blocks in writing grant applications.

Constructing a Grant Budget

(3 hours)
Covers many of the technical aspects of developing an accurate time line and budget for a grant proposal. Includes hands-on work with spreadsheets and computerized federal budget forms.

Protecting Human Subjects

(2 hours)
Gives an orientation to the ethical basis for human research and an overview of regulatory expectations. New policies, procedures and changes in federal regulations for protecting human subjects in research will be covered, as well as advice on interacting with the IRB.

GUIDELINES AND FORMS

Both hard copies and disk versions of CCH forms, as well as hard copies of the guidelines, may be obtained from the Office of Research Development Resource Room, 6th Floor Durand.

Most federal application packets can also be obtained in the Resource Room, as well as those for the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association. To see or download electronic versions, go to the links below.

RESOURCE ROOM 

The Resource Room, 6th floor Durand, is available for use from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm 
every business day. The room contains a number of resources for grant 
seekers, including: 
 

  • Files of guidelines and annual reports for more than 100 private foundations
  • Forms to use to apply for grants
  • Forms to apply for institutional approval
  • Copies of ORD publications: Handbook, Guidelines, Newsletter
  • Guidebooks and references on federal regulations
  • Reference books on research and grant seeking


There is also has a photocopier which may be used to copy grant applications, protocols or other material related to grants and research.  To use this copier, you must: 

  • Check with Funeka Sihlali (312-864-4821) about the copier's availability, preferably one day before you need to use it.
  • Supply your own paper for jobs larger than 20 pages.
  • Supply your own labor.


If you will need access to the copier after 4:00 pm or on a weekend or holiday, please make arrangements with Funeka Sihlali (312-864-4821).
