LOOKING FOR MONEY?
THE WEB CAN  HELP

The World Wide Web has acquired the reputation of being all things to all people, and for good reason. With many millions of sites now on line, chances are whatever you're looking for, you can find it on the web. There is a catch, however: How to find the proverbial needle in this prolific haystack?  Even in the relatively circumscribed world of biomedical grant funding, a multitude of sites include directories of links to potential finding sources.   Many of these have been mentioned in past issues of this Newsletter (you can find links to some of them in the CCBHS Web Site: http://www.herculeshosting.com/~cookcoun/funding.html).

Now, the CCBHS Web Site offers a faster way to track down funding agencies on line. A search engine has been set up which can locate links to several hundred funding agencies. Searching this way, you can find federal funding agencies, private foundations, corporate philanthropies, health charities and professional societies.

There are currently over 1500 links indexed. The search engine keeps track of all the significant words and phrases on the first page of all the sites it references, so a key word search has a reasonable chance of turning up appropriate opportunities without returning a lot of irrelevant information.

The search engine can find  links to:

• All the pages of the CCBHS Web Site

• All the links cited in the CCBHS Web Site

• Back issues of the Grants Newsletter for the past two years

• Several hundred funding agencies

• Federal regulations concerning research

• Guidelines and guidance documents for research issued by NIH, OPRR and the FDA

An example of some of the results found with this search engine using the key words "health" and "policy" is shown on the next page.

The CCBHS Web Search Engine can be reached at http://www.herculeshosting.com/~cookcoun/search.html

RUSH RESEARCH FORUM

Don't forget that the Rush Research Forum will be held March 27th through 29. At noon on each day, symposia will be conducted on contemporary health-related topics: Infectious Diseases (Monday); Hematology (Tuesday) and Stroke and Vascular Surgery (Wednesday). These symposium presentations will be held in the Academic Facility of Rush University at 600 S. Paulina.

At 4-6 PM on Wednesday the Sigma Xi Chapter at Rush University will sponsor its annual Faculty-Student Reception highlighting the Poster Session which this year features over 190 poster displays of ongoing research at Rush and its affiliated institutions, including Cook County Hospital.  Although posters can be viewed at any time during the three days of the Forum in the Searle Conference Center, investigators will be available at their posters during the 4-6 PM period to discuss their work.

LOOK FOR THE COOK COUNTY-RUSH COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH  COMPETITION

In 1998, the Cook County/Rush Research Affiliation Committee offered small grants for collaborative projects involving researchers from both Cook County Hospital and Rush. These awards were very popular, and many of you have asked when they will be offered again. Current plans call for  announcing the availability of these grants at the Rush Research Forum March 27-29, with grant  submissions due in late spring or early summer. Be sure to attend the Forum for more information.

HAVE YOU RECEIVED YOUR NEW GUIDELINES?

The new CCBHS Guidebook has been mailed to all the subscribers to this Newsletter. It is available locally in several departments as well.  Additional copies of the Guidebook and the accompanying disk can be picked up in Room 603 Durand between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm on week days. Call 312-633-7792 or 572-3506 to be sure the room is open before coming over. If you would like to have 20 or more copies of the new Guidebook for your area, call Bennetta Anderson at 312-633-4941.

TRANSITION TO NEW FORMS

The Cook County Hospital/Bureau Scientific Committee and the Office of Research Development will accept applications for IRB and institutional approval of projects on either the old or the new application forms until April 1, 2000.  After that date, only the new application forms may be used.

CHANGES FOR THE COOK COUNTY HOSPITAL/BUREAU IRB

The Cook County Hospital/Bureau Scientific Committee (IRB) has made the following operational changes:

1.   IRB Review Fee: A one-time review fee of $1500 will be charged to projects sponsored by for-profit entities such as pharmaceutical companies. This fee reflects the national norm for such fees.

Funds will be used to defray some costs of  complying with federal regulations. One such cost is that of translating consent forms into Spanish.  Currently, the CCH/Bureau IRB requires that any project planning to enroll 100 or more participants  must provide a consent form in Spanish.  Investigators whose projects do not have external funding and who need to have their consent forms translated may apply to the IRB for funds to obtain professional
translation services. Other planned uses of these funds include production of patient education materials and provision of training experiences for IRB members and investigators.

2.  Deadline for Submissions: The lead time for submitting a protocol, revision or progress report to be considered at a scheduled meeting has been extended to two weeks. This change is made necessary by the increasing volume of material that must be distributed for IRB meetings to all members in advance of the meeting.  Please remember that this IRB meets twice monthly, on the first and third Tuesday of the month.

FEDERAL GRANT SALARY CAP

The top salary level that can be reimbursed from a federal grant has been raised to $130,200.  For
more information, see the announcement in the NIH Guide:
http://grants.nih.govhttp://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-00-011.html

Gives an overview of the entire process of developing a project and applying for funding. Includes information on approaching both governmental and private funders, describes an approach to developing grant budgets, discusses stylistic and content issues that are frequent stumbling blocks in writing grant applications.

Constructing a Grant Budget:

Covers many of the technical aspects of developing an accurate time line and budget for a grant proposal.

What Are All These Forms? Interacting With the Scientific Committee

Gives an orientation to procedures -- and the associated forms -- used by the Scientific Committee to
ensure that patients are protected from undue risks in research. The Bureau forms will be discussed, and new policies and changes in federal regulations will be covered.

To register for any of these, call Bennetta Anderson at 312-633-4941. If you would like to schedule one or more of these workshops in your Department or at another site, please call Karen Smith at 633-4940.
