Project Title: Use of herbal medicines among hypertensive patients in a general medicine clinic.
Project PI: Viju John
Co-investigators: J Pulvirenti, G Vettiankal, K Carney, P Mariyappa, N Abu-Rustum, S Fung, R Slavensky. Department of Medicine, Cook County Hospital & Rush Medical College, as part of the CCH Clinical Epidemiology and Clinical Research Faculty Development Program.
Description: The use of herbal medicines by patients is common, yet it is frequently unappreciated by their physicians, despite treating these patients with prescription drugs. This study interviewed patients being treated for hypertension by primary care internists to measure the frequency of herbal medicine use and its association with blood pressure control and drug side effects.
