Project Title: Firm-based trial comparing three methods for teaching cardiovascular examination skills to internal medicine residents.
Project PI: Avery Hart MD
Co-investigators: Chris Smith, Ellen Mason, Peter Clarke, Janet Riddle, Sharon Fung, Yue Wang, . Department of Medicine, Cook County Hospital & Rush Medical College, as part of the CCH Clinical Epidemiology and Clinical Research Faculty Development Program.
Description: Residents’ physical examination skills are poor because attending physicians spend little time teaching these skills and use ineffective teaching methods. This trial tested whether training attending physicians to teach physical examination skills using two different structured approaches improved residents’ technical and perceptual skills in performing the cardiovascular exam compared to residents who were taught by attendings without specific training (usual teaching).
